I started my post-secondary journey in the fall of 2017 at Douglas College. I initially wanted to pursue a career in accounting, so I enrolled in the Bachelor of Business Administration program with an accounting focus. During that first semester, I lacked motivation and discipline, which was something I wasn’t familiar with, coming from a sports-heavy background. From a young age, I understood that if you want to succeed at something, you have to put the work in, and that triumph comes with sacrifice. My grades at the semester’s end reflected my lack of motivation and discipline. With that, I decided to take time away from school to figure out which career path I wanted to venture into. During my time away from school, I had the opportunity to work as an accounting clerk in two separate companies, and this is where I realized that I wasn’t genuinely passionate about accounting. I knew I still wanted to pursue business but wasn’t sure at the time which aspect I wanted to study. I eventually sat down with an older relative who went through something similar to me; he encouraged me to return to school, finish all my introductory courses, and then determine what I wanted to specialize in. I returned to school in the fall of 2018 and completed all my intro courses by the end of 2019. I took another brief hiatus from school, and when I returned in January 2023, I knew I wanted to pursue marketing. When I returned, I was more motivated than ever, and the discipline came naturally as I was pursuing something I actually enjoyed. I was never one to get good grades, even in high school, but once I started pursuing something that I enjoyed, the work quality improved drastically. I also enjoyed going to my lectures and tried my best never to miss one. What I’ve learned now, going into my last semester, is that it’s okay not to know what you want to do, but whatever it is you’re pursuing, you should enjoy it and be passionate about it.
